Considering how old our global tea culture is, and the many lenses it has been viewed through over the decades, there’s bound to be quite a lot of myth out there that’s ripe for debunking. In this session, we’ll dive into the most common misunderstandings about tea. (Spoiler alert: No, green tea is not the “best” tea.) We’ll also be taking audience questions and myths that you’ve heard! This session includes a tasty brewing exercise to help set the stage for our exploration. Some of the myths covered include:
- Tea bags aren’t good quality tea
- Some origins for tea are “good” and some are “bad”
- Tea needs to be rinsed before brewing
- White tea has the least caffeine
- Black tea has the most caffeine
- Green tea is the healthiest tea
- Fresh tea is always best

Presenter Bio
Sooz Hammond, Founder and Program Director, Being Tea
Sooz (they/she) is an award-winning educator, tea spiritual practitioner, and recognized tea industry trainer of 20 years. They are the founder of Being Tea – an immersive online education, community, and mindfulness space. Being Tea is unique for its focus on mental health awareness, trauma sensitivity, and inclusive teaching principles. Sooz is an Autistic and non-binary person, and happily eight years sober. They are also a certified trauma-informed meditation teacher and a trained journalist. Being Tea's offerings include a membership program with live weekly and recorded classes, and an 8-month first-of-its-kind Teacher Training program for tea professionals and community facilitators.
