3:30 - 4:15 pm - Tea Wars: A Window into the Song Dynasty Tea Contest Sensation (Susanna Rossi)

In this fascinating workskhop, we will go back to Song Dynasty China, a pivotal time and place in the history of Tea culture. We will explore the evolution of the DianCha (whisked tea) method and look at how it branched off to Japan to become Chanoyu (Japanese Tea Ceremony). DianCha culture gave rise to "DouCha", competitions where people would gather and battle to see who could make the best tea! We learn about DouCha and the styles of tea drinking and tea ware that came out of them. We will also look at some examples of tea bowls and do a demonstration recreating the tea competition experience.
