From the Festival to Your Living Room: The History of Tea in Mexican Culture
Date: Saturday, October 3
Time: 11:00am - 12:30pm PT
Location: Zoom
Cost: $40 (Class + Special Tea Box)
Jorge Rizo’s first TeaFestPDX class this summer was a hit and sold out! After hearing rave reviews from attendees (and from those who wished they could have joined), we’re thrilled to welcome Jorge back for a special virtual edition of his fascinating exploration of tea in Mexican culture.
This time, we’re giving Jorge, and you, more time to dive in. His full 90-minute presentation will take us on a journey through the history, culture, and traditions of tea in Mexico, with stories and insights that simply couldn’t fit into the festival’s 45-minute classroom format.
Already attended Jorge’s session at TeaFestPDX? You’ll still want to join us. This extended virtual experience will offer an even deeper look at the fascinating relationship between tea and Mexican culture.
And because no good tea adventure should be experienced empty-handed, we’ve created an optional Special Tea Tasting Box (purchased separately) to accompany the class. Curated in collaboration with Jorge, the box features a selection of teas (camellia sinensis & tisane) that share a close connection to Mexican culture.
In this box, you'll find:
- The Jasmine Pearl Lapsang Souchong: One of the teas served during Jorge’s in-person class, it pairs perfectly and aligns with the smoky notes of Mexican cuisine.
- Herald Tea Hibiscus - Hibiscus tea, or agua de jamaica, is a vibrant staple of Mexican food culture, loved for its deep ruby color and pleasantly tart flavor. It has become deeply woven into Mexican culinary tradition, where it is also cherished as a refreshing, nourishing drink and part of traditional Mexican wellness practices.
- Markham & Fitz Cocoa Tea - Cocoa Tea is made from fragrant cocoa husks, creating a naturally chocolatey infusion rooted in Mexico’s long history with cacao. Cacao was valued by Indigenous cultures of Mesoamerica as a food, beverage, and ceremonial ingredient, and its legacy remains an important part of Mexican culinary culture today.
The box will be shipped out mid-late September, and you will receive tracking information then. Limited Availability.
